PATAGONIA ARGENTINA

OPEN CALL: PATAGONIA 2027

FIRST SESSION - APRIL/may 2027

MULTIDISCIPLINARY ART & CREATIVE RESIDENCY SESSION

MORENO LAKE, BARILOCHE, ARGENTINA

PATAGONIA ARGENTINA is a special multidisciplinary residency session right by Moreno lake shores, in Bariloche, Argentina, designed for creators seeking to explore, experiment, and deepen their creative processes within the breathtaking Patagonian autumn.

Inspired by practices of deep immersion and connection in ecological paradises, PATAGONIA ARGENTINA invites residents to embrace stillness as a bridge for profound connection: with the identity of this new territory, with the unique rhythm of the creative process, with oneself, and with the community of creators sharing the space. The Patagonian autumn is the threshold of deep listening, observation and expansion. The forest of coihues and lengas changes its skin before our eyes, inviting us to slow down our pace, understand the cycles of our creative process and thinking, and inhabit a new intimacy with both the natural and human environment.

ABOUT US/MISSION

Casa Na Ilha is an artist-led organization founded in 2017. The initiative was born from the desire to create a safe space where creativity and exploration are encouraged, focusing on the construction of the creative process rather than a final product or rigid delimitations. We strongly emphasize the development and curatorial process of multidisciplinary ideas, as well as environmentally engaged projects away from the city and the distractions of daily routine. Since its inception, CNI has held multidisciplinary residencies and writing sessions at its main center in Brazil, hosting over 300 artists from around the globe.

After building bridges between art and nature in the vibrant Atlantic Forest of Casa na Ilha and venturing into the biological density of Amazônia, we extend our nomadic cartography toward the southern ends of the world. In April 2027, we bring our creative cohabitation laboratory to Argentine Patagonia, a territory where the majestic landscape and the forces of the earth manifest in their purest form.

location: moreno lake

A sanctuary in Bariloche, Argentina

Located in San Carlos de Bariloche, within the Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, the residency offers a base on the shores of Lago Moreno, a mountain lake. The environment, characterized by forests of coihues and lengas, serves as a natural laboratory for sensory exploration and site-specific research.

WHY LAGO MORENO? THE CHOICE OF TERRITORY

Choosing Lago Moreno as the anchor for this residency session is an intentional decision rooted in the power of contrast, geography, and natural pacing. Having developed our previous immersion programs within the intense humidity, vertical growth, and continuous overstimulation of the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon basin, Patagonia offers a necessary, counterbalancing landscape of austerity, horizontal expanse, and raw clarity.

Lago Moreno, located within the protected embrace of the Nahuel Huapi National Park, stands out as a unique geographic anomaly. Unlike the larger, wind-swept, and fiercely cold lakes of the region, Lago Moreno is divided into two sheltered basins, resulting in calmer, slightly more temperate waters that mirror the surrounding landscape like a colossal obsidian glass. This creates a sanctuary of stillness—a literal and metaphorical reflection pool for the creative mind.

WHY APRIL? THE AUTUMN THRESHOLD

This first 2027 session residency will take place during April, the absolute peak of the Patagonian autumn. This is a deliberate choice for artists and researchers:

The Living Palette: Within a three-week span, the ancient forests of coihues and lengas that frame Lago Moreno undergo a dramatic, day-by-day transformation, shifting from deep greens to intense shades of copper, ochre, and crimson. It is a masterclass in impermanence and a living laboratory for visual and sensory exploration.

The Quality of Silence: April marks the transition into the low season. The summer crowds dissipate, leaving the territory wrapped in an immense, profound quietness. This silence is not empty; it is a fertile space that allows for deep listening, unhurried observation, and the mental clarity needed to cultivate complex ideas.

A Natural Studio: The unique geography of Lago Moreno—with its accessible gravel beaches, exposed roots, glacial water lines, and rocky microclimates—provides an immediate, open-air laboratory right outside the refuge. It offers a landscape that does not demand to be conquered, but rather invites creators to slow down, forage for inspiration, and enter into an intimate dialogue with the elements.

By stepping into the crisp, invigorating air of Lago Moreno, residents are invited to experience a different rhythm of nature—one governed by the shedding of leaves, the alignment of mountain peaks, and the quiet power of a landscape stripping down to its essentials.

THE PROGRAM

This session offers a space for deep immersion in the Patagonian wilderness.  We will gather in a dedicated, cozy lakeside refuge nestled within a spectacular 2.5-acre park surrounded by native trees, this tranquil property offers direct and private access to the pristine shores of Lago Moreno.

Operating under the premise of freedom of inquiry and exploration of our creative mind and projects over the pressure of a final product, we offer a space for retreat and contemplation—tailored for personal exploration and introspection, yet profoundly rooted in the power of a group sharing experience alongside a community of artists from different disciplines.

The program combines independent practice time with collective driftings, mountain forest walks, and exchange gatherings overlooking the silent lakes. We seek to foster an organic dialogue where different artistic languages and expressions—whether visual, literary, sound, or research-based—intertwine through the shared experience of living and creating together in tune with the vast natural world of the south.

Key Aspects:

Freedom of Inquiry: We prioritize the journey of your creative mind, allowing space to test concepts, fail, and experiment without the burden of a final exhibition or output.

Optional Activities: Curated driftings and nature walks through the ancient woods are designed to stimulate your senses, but your time remains fully yours to manage.

Cross-Disciplinary Dialogue: The magic of the residency relies on how a photographer's view feeds a writer's text or a researcher's findings, creating an unpredictable and rich collective texture rooted in this southern landscape.

THE OCHRE CORE OF PATAGONIA

Lago Moreno, at the very core of Bariloche’s Circuito Chico, was strategically selected as the canvas for this session. Situated where the granite peaks of the Andes melt into millennial woods, this environment serves as a living laboratory for deep introspection and earthly connection. Perched on the shores of this pristine glacial body of water, the venue provides a scenic haven that beautifully balances the vastness of the Patagonian wilderness with the stillness required for profound individual inquiry.

The location is uniquely defined by its contrast to the bustling tourist trails, offering a secluded refuge of silence and raw beauty. Sheltered by the towering presence of Mount López, participants are immersed in a fragile, awe-inspiring ecosystem that shifts into vibrant hues of ocher, copper, and gold during the southern autumn. Far more than just a geographic coordinate, this place dictates our rhythm. Beyond our private 2.5-acre base, the program embraces the surrounding Llao Llao Municipal Park and its hidden trails as an extended laboratory. Moving to the pulse of the southern winds and the seasonal transition, this location offers a direct, unmediated entry into the vibrant truth of Patagonia.

THE ECOSYSTEM & GEOGRAPHY

THE WHISPER OF THE ANCIENT WOODS & THE MAP OF INQUIRY

The residency unfolds within a landscape shaped by glaciers, continuous winds, and silent transformations. The shores of Lago Moreno are bordered by a cold temperate rainforest, a fragile refuge where millennial trees stand as witnesses to time. During the southern autumn, the vertical ecosystem of the Andes undergoes a dramatic metamorphic shift, creating an environment that invites creators to slow down, observe, and align with the seasonal transition.

The Amber Canopy: The forest is dominated by native species like lengas, ñires, and coihues. As temperatures drop, the deciduous trees ignite in fiery shades of red and copper before shedding their leaves, creating a thick, rustling carpet that dampens sound and transforms the forest floor into a texturized canvas.

The Glacial Waters: Lago Moreno is a deep, pristine body of water fed by mountain thaws. Unlike other lakes in the region, it is divided into two basins (Lago Moreno Oeste and Lago Moreno Este) connected by a narrow channel. In April, the typical summer winds settle into stillness, turning the lake surface into a massive, dark mirror that duplicates the granite peaks of Mount López and the shifting autumn skies.

The Living Silence: While the local fauna remains mostly hidden in the deep woods, the sky belongs to the majestic Andean condor and the southern caracara. The crisp air carries the echoing tap of the Magellanic woodpecker, punctuating the profound quietude of the landscape.

The Subterranean Network: Beneath the moss-covered soil, a complex kingdom of autumn fungi, lichens, and mycorrhizal networks thrives in the damp shade. This hidden collective system mirrors our residency framework: a quiet, interconnected web of diverse elements feeding each other below the surface.

The Extended Laboratory (Circuito Chico & Beyond):

Our location serves as an immediate gateway to the Circuito Chico, a loop where geography offers both immediate paths and expansive regional horizons for field research, acoustic mapping, and solitary driftings:

Immediate Trails & Sanctuary Ecosystems (The Llao Llao Municipal Park):

Just a short distance from our base, the protected forest opens into an interconnected network of low-intensity trails, ideal for carrying notebooks or recording gear:

Sendero de los Arrayanes: A path looping through a dense cluster of arrayanes (myrtle trees), famous for their cold, smooth, twisted orange bark and delicate white autumn foliage.

Cerrito Llao Llao: A gentle, steady climb through giant ferns and bamboo thickets that culminates in a panoramic clifftop viewpoint, offering a stunning bird's-eye view of the intersection between Lago Blest and Lago Nahuel Huapi.

Villa Tacul & Bahía López: Secluded gravel shores sheltered by colossal rock faces. These bays act as natural amphitheaters where the massive stone walls of Mount López plunge straight into the water, creating unique acoustic environments and isolated pockets for sculpture or contemplative rest.

Lago Escondido & Puente Romano: A hidden, dark-water lake tucked away in the deep woods, accessible via an ancient wooden bridge wrapped in moss, where the water remains perfectly still even on windy days.

The Mountain Thresholds (Alpine Inquiries):

For those seeking a deeper, more physical dialogue with the vertical landscape, the region’s iconic mountain trails sit nearby:

Sendero al Refugio López: The trailhead is located right at the edge of the circuit. This demanding, steep ascent transitions quickly from the golden autumn canopy to the stark, granite alpine zone, offering breathtaking views of the entire lake system and the high Andean peaks.

Cerro Campanario: Located a few kilometers down the road, this summit (accessible by foot or chairlift) provides what is widely considered one of the most complete 360-degree views of Patagonia, mapping out the intricate labyrinth of peninsulas, lakes, and islands.

Regional Landmarks & Contrasts (The Surrounding Territory):

While the refuge remains completely insulated from the outside rush, it is connected to Bariloche’s rich cultural and geological tapestry:

Puerto Pañuelo & Tonal Frontiers: Situated nearby, this historic port is the departure point for lake navigations heading deep into the Andes toward Puerto Blest or the massive Ventisquero Negro glacier at the base of Mount Tronador—the highest peak in the region.

The Architectural Heritage: The area is anchored by the historic, alpine-style timber-and-stone architecture of the Llao Llao Hotel and the nearby San Eduardo Chapel, standing as silent monoliths integrated into the hillsides.

The Steppe Counter-Narrative: Twenty-five kilometers east, the landscape fractures completely. The humid, ancient forests abruptly dry out into the vast, wind-swept Patagonian Steppe—a desert of bare horizons, volcanic rock formations, and low shrubs that offers a stark, minimalist visual counter-narrative to our vibrant lake environment.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

FLIGHTS & TRAVEL COORDINATION

Step 1: International Arrival in Argentina

International participants will fly into Buenos Aires, the main gateway to the country. Most international flights land at Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE), commonly known as Ezeiza.

Important Connection Note: While some domestic flights to Bariloche depart directly from Ezeiza (EZE), many operate from Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (AEP), the city-center airport.

Transfer Time: If you need to change airports in Buenos Aires (from EZE to AEP), you must allow at least 4 to 5 hours between flights to clear customs, retrieve your luggage, travel across the city via shuttle (such as Tienda León) or taxi, and check in for your domestic leg.

We suggest using tools like Google Flights or Skyscanner to coordinate these schedules well in advance.

Step 2: Domestic Flight to Bariloche

From Buenos Aires (AEP or EZE), book your domestic flight to San Carlos de Bariloche International Airport (BRC).

Flight Duration: Approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Typical Arrival Times: Most domestic flights land in Bariloche between 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM.

Airlines: Aerolíneas Argentinas, Flybondi, or JetSMART.

Step 3: Group Transfer to Lago Moreno

To ensure a smooth start, we provide one single group pick-up from Bariloche Airport (BRC) directly to our lakeside base.

Scheduled Pick-up: The shuttle departure will be timed according to the group's flight arrivals, leaving the airport no later than 3:00 PM.

Arrival Coordination: Please ensure your domestic flight lands before 2:30 PM to allow time for luggage collection. If you miss the group shuttle due to flight delays or other reasons, you will be responsible for your own transportation to the venue at kilometer 14.3 of Avenida Tres Lagos. Remis services, official airport taxis, and applications like Uber are available at the arrivals hall (approx. $25–$35 USD).

Orientation: We ask everyone to be at the lakeside base by 5:30 PM. We will host our first communal dinner and an orientation session to welcome the autumn night and begin our 3-week immersion together.

Step 4: Return Travel & Check-out

Check-out takes place on the final day of the residency.

Departure Transfer: Participants are responsible for arranging their own transfer back to Bariloche Airport (BRC). Our on-site team will assist in booking local remis or trusted drivers to ensure everyone departs on time.

Coordination: Please share your return flight details with us during the final week so we can help group residents who are sharing similar departure times to split transfer costs.

Important Note on Delays: Patagonian autumn weather can occasionally cause flight scheduling shifts. If you encounter cancellations or significant delays that cause you to miss the group pick-up, please contact our team immediately via WhatsApp. While we cannot hold the group shuttle, we will guide you on how to reach the lakeside refuge safely.

WHAT TO BRING

Essentials

Pack for Variable Weather (The "Layering" Rule): April in Patagonia marks the deep transition into autumn. Temperatures drop significantly, ranging from 2°C (35.6°F) at night to 14°C (57.2°F) on sunny days. Wind and sudden rain are common. Packing in versatile layers is key.

Water Bottle / Thermos: Essential for field walks and keeping warm during outdoor contemplation.

Headlamp / Flashlight: Essential for walking through the 2.5-acre park and dark forest trails at night.

Dry Bags / Waterproof Covers: To protect your laptop, cameras, notebooks, and art supplies from sudden Patagonian rain during outdoor driftings.

Clothing & Accessories

The Three-Layer System:

Base Layer: Thermal underwear (top and bottom), preferably merino wool or synthetic tech fabrics.

Insulation Layer: Fleece jackets, wool sweaters, or a lightweight down jacket.

Outer Shell: A windproof and waterproof jacket (Gore-Tex or similar breathable material) to shield you from the southern winds.

Trekking Pants: Comfortable, quick-dry, or water-resistant pants for field walks. Avoid heavy denim jeans for hiking.

Footwear: Broken-in, sturdy trekking boots or trail running shoes with good grip for mountain terrain and damp forest soil. Bring comfortable slippers, thick wool socks, or indoor shoes for the heated common areas.

Gloves, Scarf, and Beanie: A warm hat and gloves are mandatory for late afternoons and early mornings on the shore of Lago Moreno.

Small Daypack: A 20 to 30-liter backpack for daily excursions, carrying your layers, water, and research gear.

Toiletries & Health

Sunblock & Lip Protector SPF 30+: The Patagonian sun can be intensely bright, and the crisp alpine wind dries out skin and lips quickly.

Personal Med Kit: Bring any specific prescribed medications you require. Pharmacies are located a few kilometers away, but not in the immediate vicinity of the base.

Moisturizing Cream: Useful to counteract the skin-drying effects of central heating and cold mountain air.

Argentine Pesos (ARS) & US Dollars (USD): While cards are widely accepted in Bariloche, having physical cash is highly recommended for small local shops, mountain kiosks, and tips. Cash exchange options can be coordinated upon arrival.

Art & Optional Items

Professional Art Supplies: Bring your specific creative equipment and field notebooks. Consider sturdy cases or backing boards, as working outdoors means dealing with wind.

Power Bank: Cold weather drains smartphone and camera batteries significantly faster. A portable power bank is essential for long field sessions.

Earplugs: Although all rooms and bathrooms are private, earplugs are helpful for those sensitive to the sound of Patagonian winds rustling through the ancient trees at night.
