AMAZÔNIA

AMAZON 2026 SESSION

IMMERSIVE MULTIDISCIPLINARY ART RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN THE HEART OF THE AMAZON, brazil

AMAZÔNIA: AMAZON SESSION is a multidisciplinary artist immersive residency program taking place in the heart of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. Designed to gather creatives of all disciplines, the program fosters exploration, experimentation, connection and deep research. By engaging with the Amazon rainforest’s unique biodiversity, inhabitants, rhythms and forms, participants are encouraged to stimulate their artistic process and forge new and deeper creative connections on their fields.

Set in Alter do Chão, the blue heart of the Tapajós, we see the forest not just as a backdrop, but as a mirror. Through ‘artistic foraging’ and deep immersion in the Amazon rainforest, we strive to reconnect with the territory and our inner selves. This residency provides a space where creatives can develop ideas, ground their practice in the soil of Alter do Chão, and engage meaningfully with the local community.

ABOUT US/MISSION

Casa Na Ilha is an artist-led organization founded in 2017. The initiative was born from the desire to create a safe space where creativity and exploration are encouraged, focusing on the construction of the creative process rather than a final product or rigid delimitations. We strongly emphasize the development and curatorial process of multidisciplinary ideas, as well as environmentally engaged projects away from the city and the distractions of daily routine. Since its inception, CNI has held multidisciplinary residencies and writing sessions at its main center in Brazil, hosting over 300 artists from around the globe.

At a time when the global whirlwind leaves us feeling adrift and disconnected, this special immersion session CNI AMAZÔNIA: AMAZON SESSION was conceived from the same core premise: a visceral need to reconnect with nature, with the territory, and ultimately, with our own essence. We believe art is the ultimate tool for navigating our place within the living world. This edition is designed as a deliberate intervention, a pause, to silence the noise and allow the creative self to rise,  to further deepen the creative process and our connection with the natural world.

November 2026: November 9 to November 30, 2026

3 weeks (2 weeks availability, please contact us)

ELIGIBILITY

We invite artists and practitioners from all disciplines to apply. We welcome a diverse global community of thinkers and makers, including—but not limited to—visual artists, photographers, filmmakers, curators, writers, poets, musicians, sound artists, performers, botanists, scientists, activists, and researchers. We seek individuals who wish to deep dive into their creative process, using the unique context of the rainforest to expand their practice and explore new investigative paths.

Our program is designed for professionals at every stage of their journey, from emerging voices to established practitioners. While our heart is in arts and culture, we believe that the most vital breakthroughs happen through cross-disciplinary exchange; therefore, we actively encourage applications from those with non-traditional backgrounds who wish to bridge their knowledge with the forest.

The Amazon is a rhythmic and exhaling landscape that challenges us to consider the boundary between human life and the intricate, more-than-human systems of the jungle.

Community & Dynamics

Group Spirit: To ensure an intimate and focused experience, each residency is limited to a small, intentional group of up to 10 participants.

Language & Communication: While the residency takes place in Brazil, there is no requirement to speak Portuguese or Spanish, as both on-site curators are fluent in English. However, please note that formal translation services are not provided; our curators will facilitate communication within the group and during guided experiences in a peer-to-peer capacity.

Mindset:  We value a spirit of reciprocity, a willingness to embrace communal living, and the openness to step beyond the familiar to prioritize process over product.

Preparedness: A reasonable level of physical fitness is helpful for navigating the jungle terrain. However, as all organized activities are entirely optional, you are free to tailor the experience to your own physical comfort and pace.

Inclusivity: If you have concerns regarding health, mobility, or specific requirements, we encourage you to reach out. We strive to make necessary adjustments to ensure this program is accessible to everyone where possible.

APPLICATION PROCESS & DEADLINES

Application form is available upon request to [email protected]. We operate a rolling application process throughout the year with various deadlines. You will receive a decision on your application within 7 days of submission. the program

The Amazon Edition offers a sanctuary for deep, site-responsive immersion, where creative practice and field research converge within the living pulse of the jungle. Moving beyond traditional structures, we invite participants to engage in an intimate dialogue with the land, guided by the wisdom of local collaborators and the raw intelligence of the ecosystem. Our goal is to cultivate a space for "situated learning," where artists can deconstruct their usual routines and re-root their work in the specific ecological and cultural knowledge systems of the Tapajós.

The program is built upon the freedom of inquiry rather than the pressure of production. We provide the stillness needed for residents to cultivate their own unique investigative paths, encouraging a slow and intentional absorption of the environment. By practicing ‘artistic foraging’ and experiential learning, participants are invited to let their creative essence emerge naturally from the quietude of the forest. While the practice remains self-directed and unscheduled, two curators/guides will be on-site to organize various practices and activities, which artists may choose to join at their own discretion.

The Amazon Edition will be hosted at Campos de Heliantos, a space dedicated to experimentation and the production of new languages and contemporary forms of expression. It functions as a research center for the “Creative Self” (Eu Criativo), providing a platform that encourages the flow of ideas between different systems and fosters critical thinking about the world around us. As an institution, it has been hosting poetic residencies and promoting dialogues on ecofeminism, contemporary art, performance, and artistic production.

Our residency is a living organism, balancing solitary reflection with collective exploration. The journey integrates self-directed time with curated expeditions into primary forests and riverside communities—encounters designed to share ancestral perspectives and ground each artistic inquiry in the reality of the territory. To honor this pause and the individual creative process, all organized activities—including those covered by the program—are entirely optional. We deeply respect the unique rhythm and needs of each resident, allowing them the freedom to choose their level of engagement or remain in their own solitary flow.

The program is designed to be fluid and non-intrusive. We typically dedicate part of the experience to these shared field activities and group dialogues, leaving the remaining time entirely open for personal "foraging" and creative stillness. For each participant, this residence is an unique manifestation.

LOCATION: alter do chão

THE BLUE HEART OF THE AMAZON

Alter do Chão was carefully chosen as the setting for this program. Located in northern Brazil, deep in the heart of the rainforest, the village is strategically positioned on the right bank of the Tapajós River—a majestic "clear-water" river and one of the most significant tributaries within the vast Amazon Basin. The meeting of these transparent waters and the Igapó (mysterious forests that remain submerged during the flood season) creates a space for deep introspection. This territory serves as a living laboratory where the cycles of water and wood invite us to recalibrate our connection to the Earth. Amidst its lush complexity, the Tapajós reveals profound narratives of endurance and interconnectedness, standing on the frontline of global environmental shifts and the urgent struggle for forest preservation.

Alter do Chão is an exceptional riverside landscape shaped by the rhythmic rise and fall of the Amazonian tides, ancient geological formations, and profound ecological adaptations. Perched on the right bank of the Tapajós River—a colossal "clear-water" tributary of the Amazon Basin—this village serves as our gateway into a territory where the line between water and forest is perpetually blurred. Surrounded by the Igapó (mysterious flooded forests) and the crystal-clear currents of the Tapajós, the location offers a sanctuary that balances vibrant community life with vast, untouched wilderness for focused, reflective inquiry.

The village and its surrounding riverbanks provide a striking point of contrast to the dense, primary jungle. Here, life, ancestral traditions, and the Borari people have coexisted for millennia within fragile, water-fed ecosystems. The region’s unique "Amazonian Caribbean" beaches emerge only when the river recedes, revealing a shifting landscape that invites participants into a deep period of work, sensory exploration, and place-based research.

Rooted in the spirit of the wayfarer, our project remains intentionally fluid. While our primary base is in Alter do Chão—hosted at the creative sanctuary of Campos de Heliantos—we view the entire 500,000-hectare Tapajós National Forest (FLONA) and its intricate network of Igarapés (canoe paths) as our extended laboratory. This territory offers both refuge and immense reach: situated between the primary forest and the river’s edge, it is home to pink river dolphins, sloths, ancient Samaúma trees, and layers of cultural history that speak to the resilience of the forest. By moving with the rhythms of the water, we ensure that each residency is an immersive encounter with the living truth of the Amazon.

THE ECOSYSTEM: A Territory Shaped by Water

At the core of this residency is a deep engagement with the hydrological cycles of the Amazon. Water here is not just a landscape; it is the architect of life, a seasonal clock that dictates every movement. The Tapajós River, with its unique "clear-water" chemistry, acts as a vast mirror reflecting the sky and the forest, creating a sensory environment unlike any other part of the basin.

The Igapó & The Igarapé:  Igapó, the mystical flooded forest where ancient trees live half the year submerged in tea-colored waters. These are spaces of profound silence and "artistic foraging," accessible only by gliding through Igarapés—narrow, winding canoe paths that serve as the veins of the jungle. These waterways offer a perspective of the forest from within, where the canopy forms a tunnel of life overhead.

The FLONA (Tapajós National Forest): a 500,000-hectare protected sanctuary of primary rainforest. It is home to the giants of the Amazon, such as the Samaúma, a tree regarded as the "ladder of the spirits" by local cultures. The forest is a dense library of biodiversity, offering a raw, unshielded encounter with the complexity of life and the urgent necessity of its preservation.

THE COMMUNITIES: Ancestral Knowledge & Resilience

The territory of Alter do Chão and the Tapajós is a living cultural tapestry, the presence of the Borari people, the original guardians of this land, whose ceramic traditions and connection to the soil date back thousands of years.

Beyond the village, the Ribeirinho communities—river-dwelling families whose lives are a masterclass in coexistence with the forest’s fluctuations. These communities are the keepers of "situated knowledge," from sustainable resin harvesting to traditional medicine.

INQUIRY THROUGH OBSERVATION

We don't just "visit" this nature; we learn to read its traces. Our 'artistic foraging' encourages residents to observe these species not as subjects, but as collaborators in the creative process—each bird call, root structure, and insect trail offering a new language for research and expression.

THE LIVING TAPESTRY:

Flora & Fauna: The Amazon Edition is an immersion into one of the most biodiverse corridors on the planet, where every layer of the forest—from the dark soil to the sun-drenched canopy—is teeming with life. This is a place where the "more-than-human" world is not just seen, but felt.

Botanical Giants & Sacred Medicine: The flora of the Tapajós is a testament to resilience. You will stand in the presence of the Samaúma, the "Queen of the Forest," whose massive buttress roots act as natural resonators for the jungle's pulse. We explore a landscape rich in Amescla (fragrant resin), Rubber trees, and medicinal plants that have sustained local life for millennia. During the flood, the Victoria Amazonica water lilies spread their massive leaves across the lakes, mirroring the celestial geometry of the stars above.

The Guardians of the Water: The river is home to the iconic Pink River Dolphin (Boto) and the gray Tucuxi, creatures steeped in local myth that often accompany our boat journeys. Along the banks, you may spot the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin bird or the vibrant Macaws crossing the sky in pairs.

Life in the Canopy: The forest floor and the heights above are alive with movement. It is common to encounter Sloths moving with the deliberate pace we seek for our "sacred pause," while the morning air is often pierced by the guttural calls of Howler Monkeys. From the intricate architecture of Leafcutter Ants to the iridescent flash of a Blue Morpho butterfly, the fauna here serves as a constant reminder of the intricate interdependencies that sustain the Amazonian equilibrium.

ACCOMODATION

Campos de Heliantos, the cohort venue, features facilities that place residents in direct contact with the diversity of the Amazon Rainforest. More than just a house, it is a living laboratory where the architecture breathes with the forest. THE OPEN-AIR STUDIO: Working with the Jungle

Our program encourages you to step beyond the walls of a conventional studio and challenge yourself to learn directly from the living land. In the Amazon, the territory becomes your primary workshop, and the elements—water, mud, light, and humidity—become your collaborators.

Whether you are navigating an Igarapé in a canoe or finding stillness under the canopy of the primary forest, we invite you to develop open-air practices where your process is dictated by the rhythm of the tides, the shifting tropical light, and the profound silence of the trees.
